Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide
Mon Oct 06, 2008
Mosquito Lagoon fishing guides
are a unique breed of anglers primarily seeking redfish
in the shallow water near Merritt Island's northern shoreline. On
almost any given day, you'll find anglers searching the lagoon's
grass flats armed with light spinning tackle or
fly rod, polarized glasses and a small specialized
shallow draft skiff called a flats boat. These
boats enable guide and angler the ability to traverse the shallowest
parts of the Mosquito Lagoon where they can sightfish
for redfish in their natural haunts.
The Intra Coastal Waterway spans almost the entire
eastern seaboard of North America and encompasses the Mosquito Lagoon
including the Indian River Lagoon on Florida's
east coast. Development is limited around the perimeter of the lagoon
and the pristine waters consistently host large schools of marauding
red drum and wading birds. The Lagoon
is surrounded by the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge
and is the primary reason there is little development on it's coastline.
Strict enforcement and management of the Refuge and Lagoon are keeping
the waters productive for fishing and discouraging encroachment
on the natural mangrove lined shores. Outdoorsmen have several places
to observe migratory birds, endangered wildlife and many native
species of interest including alligators and rosette spoonbills,
but it's the redfish of the Mosquito Lagoon that get our angler's
attention the most.
Redfish Guide
Redfish can be caught with many different methods but the most
exciting is probably sightfishing in only inches of shallow clear
water. You'll often see large redfish exceeding 20 pounds
wallowing or tailing in shallow
water foraging for crabs and shrimp with their backs and tails protruding
though the water's surface. This provides great sport for the avid
anglers and satisfaction to the most experienced fly fishermen needing
to test out their fly fishing tackle and casting skills.
Give a full time fishing guide with years of experience a chance
to take you out on a day of discovery and fishing on East Central
Florida's Mosquito Lagoon to get a chance at catching that trophy
sized redfish in our shallow water estuaries. Check out our Mosquito
Lagoon Fishing Report or Mosquito Lagoon Photo Gallery. We encourage
catch & release but also encourage our anglers to be responsible
if they catch for table fare. |
