Fishing and Hunting Trips

Wed Jan 07, 2009

I had the remarkable opportunity to take a few days off of my fishing charter business and accompany my good friend Captain Brent Hancock to his hunting camp in the Southeast part of the United States. Alabama's woods provided a great refuge for me to relax, take some photographs of wildlife and the outdoors and have several nights of sitting around the campfire and sharing stories and experiences of each day.

It was bow hunting season in early November and Brent and his fellow camp owners had been hard at work for the last several years filling feeders in the off season and planting food plots to attract and feed the deer during the entire four months of hunting season. Their efforts have obviously paid off as the deer population on their almost 1,300 acre hunting lease has a healthy deer population of both does and bucks and the deer seem happy and content to stay around during my visit with a healthy amount of food, cover and population to substain good numbers of deer for managment and hunting. Personally I'd never realized how much time and expense was put into a hunting lease if everyone on the the lease cooperates and has the same vision.

Every morning we woke up before daylight and positioned ourselves near or around one of the many feeding plots these guys had planted just weeks before. Winter rye was abundant and a good mix of other plant life was starting to come in. There wasn't a day tha went by that I didn't see several deer feeding on the plots or in a hardwood hamock on the edge of the planted pine forest. The deer on Brents lease are simply abundant and look as heathy as any I'd seen in the southeast. [continue...]
